Our main focus is to find a solution which will provide students an adequate nights sleep, without hindering the organization of school districts. In order for students to receive more hours asleep, delaying school start times to 8:30 am, will increase the number of hours students spend sleeping per night. Although, the school day would shorten, each class period would only lose approximately six minutes of class time. Six minutes can be crucial to a teacher's lesson plan, however losing six minutes of class time in exchange for having alert students who are more likely to successfully encode and focus on material being presented, is extremely advantageous and outweighs the six minutes of lost time. If the government were to implement a policy that required schools to start at 8:30 am, both teachers and students would have the opportunity to live a healthier lifestyle. The government could assist in implementing this policy by providing funds as needed; staff, transportation, or busing. The federal government will provide this funding when necessary by identifying funds through the department of education. Having schools start at a later time while keeping the dismal time as is, allows for after school activities to persist and will not interfere with previously planned bus schedules. The average student struggles daily to participate in extracurricular activities, complete all assigned homework, study for exams and maintain a stable state of both mental and physical health. Pushing back the times that students need to be present in school, will allow the individual to sleep more, perform better in school, and receive the health benefits which a normal amount of sleep offers. Our goal is to attempt at solving sleep deprivation within communities without creating conflict. That being said, all situations consist of both pros and cons. Our solution could be considered disadvantageous in the sense that students may procrastinate knowing they have more time to complete assignments, which could potentially result in complacent behavior. In addition, this policy could hinder the daily life of families who may have early work responsibilities. However, our solution is beneficial as follows; students will be able practice selective attention, attention spans will increase, encoding and retrieving information will become easier (memory will improve), cognitive tasks will become more efficient, mentally the students will be able to de-stress, possibility of weight gain will decrease and both long/short-term health will benefit. Furthermore, allowing opportunity for increase sleep can have a positive benefit in student behavior, particularly in the younger age group. Lastly, our solution is constitutional given that it continues to allow the life, liberty, and happiness of citizens. The government has intervened in establishing laws that protect the health and well being of society. For examples, they have set age limits for alcohol consumption and ban illicit drug use. As explained, sleep is crucial to ones health which is why it does not go beyond the government to delay schools start times to improve daily health of individuals In addition, it doesn't nearly take away rights from individuals, it rather serves to promote and increase their genuine well being.
